Destinations

Longreach

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting Australia’s heartland in Outback Queensland, it’s time to grab your kit and head for the bush! Longreach is the ideal outback base for soaking up the history and heritage of this amazing region.

Book a room in an old country pub and meet some local characters. Whether your accommodation tastes lean towards camping under the stars or air-conditioned comfort, Longreach offers visitors plenty of options.

Winton

Banjo Paterson wrote the lyrics for the famous Waltzing Matilda ballad in 1895, while staying at Dagworth Station outside Winton. He first played the unofficial national anthem at Winton’s North Gregory Hotel. Recognised as the ‘home’ of Australian bush poetry, Winton hosts the annual Bronze Swagman Award.

The iconic Australian airline, Qantas started here in November 1920. They held the first board meeting in the Winton Club way back in 1921! However if you want to visit the Qantas Founders Museum, you’ll have to head to Longreach.

Birdsville

Noted for its isolation and wild country, Birdsville is a classic ‘must visit’ Outback Town. The town began life as ‘Diamantina Crossing’ in 1881. Later given the name of Birdsville in 1885, reportedly a compliment to the local birdlife. The name Burtsville, after the popular settler J. Burt was also proposed but was eventually declined. The town’s original function was as a ‘tariff wall’ between Queensland and South Australia. Tolls which had provided the town’s income finally ceased in 1901 with the formation of the Federation and the town population declined.

Karumba

Karumba is a coastal town in the Gulf of Carpentaria, at the mouth of the Norman River. This small town is at the centre of the Gulf’s prawning industry. The surrounds of Karumba feature a series of meandering saltwater tidal estuaries. These wetlands extend inland for approximately 30 kilometres creating a haven for many species of wildlife, including saltwater crocodiles and a vast array of bird species such as pelicans, brolgas and black swans.

Windorah

Windorah is an Aboriginal word meaning “big fish” and there are still big yellowbelly cruising the depths of Cooper’s Creek near Windorah. The term Channel Country refers to the intricate network of braided channels and waterholes that spread up to 80km across the landscape during flooding, producing what is said to be the best cattle fattening pasture in the world. For most of the time the water is confined to deep, permanent waterholes, perfect spots for camping, fishing and relaxation.

Boulia

There are a number of theories and mysteries surrounding Boulia. Some sources say that Boulia was named by the Pitta Pitta tribe after the waterhole Bulzoo Bulzoo, however the location of the waterhole is quite a distance from the Boulia waterhole. Boulia is probably best known for the mysterious Queensland icon, the Min Min Light. There are various yarns about the light sightings which are preserved and presented to visitors at the Min Min Encounter complex.

Charleville

Charleville is in the heart of Queensland’s ‘mulga country’, which is rich in history, flora and fauna. It is the largest town in the south west of the Outback region. The Government surveyor named the town after the area in Ireland where he had lived.

In March 1888, rail transport reached the town providing a direct link with Brisbane. This line still operates passenger services twice a week to Charleville on board Queensland Rail’s Westlander.

Innamincka

Innamincka is a fascinating outback destination with a permanent population of about 12 residents, some 400 kilometres south-east of Birdsville.

Cullyamurra Waterhole on the creek is always good for camping and fishing. Sturt discovered the waterhole in 1845 and it has never been dry since. It is eight kilometres long and up to 28 metres deep. At the eastern end you’ll find ancient Aboriginal rock carvings.

Ilfracombe

Ilfracombe got its name from a small town in Devonshire England. This little town originated in 1891 as a transport nucleus for Wellshot Station. It was the largest sheep station in the world at the time (in terms of stock numbers). The town had three hotels; each with its own dance hall, a soft drink maker, a coach builder, two general stores, a billiard saloon, a dressmaker, three commission agents, a couple of butchers, a baker and a saddler.

There are a number of theories and mysteries surrounding Boulia. Some sources say that Boulia was named by the Pitta Pitta tribe after the waterhole Bulzoo Bulzoo, however the location of the waterhole is quite a distance from the Boulia waterhole. Happy Customers

"We took the ‘Spirit of the Outback’ train out to Longreach and were met by Dave from ‘Outback Aussie Tours’ at the station and taken to our accommodation the ‘Saltbush Retreat’. These huts are timber slab huts and are very comfortable. From there through the next 6 days we were out and about sightseeing on sheep and cattle stations, boat cruise on the Thomas River, barbecues and all the tourist and dinosaurs sites from Longreach to Winton. Absolutely great trip, thanks Dave."
"I have just returned from a tour of Longreach and Winton with Outback Aussie Tours. Our tour guide/driver, MJ, was amazing and certainly made our holiday. The information and stories MJ provided to us plus her amazing knowledge of Outback Australia really made this an exceptional tour. The places we stayed, visited and explored certainly gave us an all round appreciation of Outback Queensland. The food and hospitality were fantastic. ."
