3 Day Katherine River Safari

Gecko Canoeing’s most popular trip.  Using top quality equipment and accredited, qualified guides, this trip covers 40 to 55 kilometres of wildlife rich river, downstream from Katherine and away from the crowds. Fed by springs and soaks throughout the long ‘Dry Season’, the river below the Gorge, winds through rocky banks, paperbark forests, small rapids and pandanus channels. Comfortable bush camping, great dining, fantastic service and wildlife encounters – it all adds up to being a unique experience. A trip you will never forget.

The Jatbula Trail

The Jatbula Trail is a trip of a lifetime, giving you the opportunity to walk through Nitmiluk National Park from the famous Nitmiluk Gorge to Leliyn (Edith Falls). The trail is an ancient ‘Message stick’ trail used by the Jawoyn people. Overlooking the Seventeen Mile Valley and beyond, the trail features magnificent waterfalls tumbling from the high sandstone escarpment, these then feed into creeks surrounded by shady monsoon forests and the rock outcrops of the escarpment provide great opportunities to view stunning ancient rock art.

You will hike between 10-17kms per day, completely dependant on your campsite destinations, which can be reached between 12pm and 2pm each day. On arriving at camp you are free to relax, swim, read and enjoy the beauty of your surrounds. Each campsite has its own water source, from a small babbling spring fed creek to a 30 metre high waterfall. Each afternoon brings about a different pool or spa to sit back and relax in.  Each day will also present a new set of challenges, from river crossings to hill climbs (nothing too big), there will be flat open country on the top of the escarpment and boggy wet country along the creeks that we follow. Something new around every corner, whether you are an experienced hiker or just someone who is willing to try something new and exciting.

"brilliant tour. nothing like I've done before. canoeing 3 days was something I enjoyed greatly! relaxing and full of adventure. great food, amazing tour guide in Travis and a challenge to kayak down the river.. loved every aspect of it! be ready to see some crocs up close and personal!"
"We jumped on the 3 Day Katherine River Kayak Tour a day after completing the Jatbula Trail. So lovely not have to think about planning and food prep. Travis and Isaac tirelessly looked after our diverse group of 10. They were professional, good humoured, knowledgable and amazing camp fire cooks. An immersive experience on the Katherine River with relaxed paddling plus a nice shot of adrenaline and adventure each day on some grade 1 or 2 rapids. Felt safe at all times and head guide, Travis, was a wealth of information on the river, its birds and plant life along its shore. His love and respect for the river in all its moods from flood to dry was obvious. Lots of swims and loved sleeping under the stars. Food was delicious, healthy and plentiful. Must do trip for active adventurers in the NT."
